BBC Radio Clwyd went on air from studios in Mold as an opt out service from BBC Radio Wales in October 1981. It had been preceded by BBC Radio Deeside from February 1980 with a smaller coverage area.

Sadly the BBC Radio Clwyd opt out programmes and on air identity were terminated in October 1993 although local bulletins for north-east Wales continued until 2002, produced from the summer of 1998 from facilities in Wrecsam.

It is amazing how the eastern edge of the transmitter service area magically aligned EXACTLY with the national border between England and Wales, although in reality the signal was of equally good quality in the neighboring parts of Cheshire and Merseyside.

Transmissions of BBC Radio Wales on 657 kHz MF from the Wrecsam transmitter ended on October 24, 2018 when the BBC Radio Wales service replaced the BBC Radio 3 service on 91.1 MHz VHF from the Llangollen transmitter. (BBC Radio 3 was also replaced by BBC Radio Wales on thirty-one other FM transmitters in Mid Wales and North East Wales on this date).

CORRECTION — According to the Radio 3 Forum website, the change from BBC Radio 3 to BBC Radio Wales on the other 31 transmitters occurred a week later than Llangollen.
