✎ BBC Annual Plan 2017/2018

4 July 2017 tbs.pm/12839

The BBC has published its new Annual Plan for 2017-8. The news coverage has mostly focused on an expansion of CBBC and Cbeebies – at least in budget terms – but there are a few other points worth noting:

  • A new BBC Scotland Channel broadcasting in the evenings and providing a full news service, presumably on Freeview channel 8 or thereabouts.
  • A new BBC Wales Channel on iPlayer, similar to how BBC Three is notionally a “channel” on the service.
  • BBC Three’s management to move from London to Birmingham.
  • The much-contracted BBC World Service on radio will start to expand again, with new services in Amharic, Afaan Oromo, Tigrinya, Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo, Korean, Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi and Serbian.
  • The World Service will also move away from the all-news format it has slowly been changing to over the last 20 years, with more science and music programmes.

I would wonder how U.S. public radio would feel about the World Service cutting back on news and current affairs–on almost every NPR station that programs primarily news and speech, the World Service is carried live during the overnight hours (generally 0600 to 1200 GMT). I assume there would be no complaints about airing “Just a Minute” or “ISIHAC” or some quiz or panel game in those hours, but I would feel that a music program would not be welcomed by the NPR stations.
