648’s final moments

13 April 2011 tbs.pm/1257

The BBC World Service is in the news this morning, with Commons foreign affairs select committee calling for the recent cuts to the service, to be reversed.

One cut which is unlikely to ever be reversed is the recent switch off of medium wave transmissions to Western Europe on 648KHz medium wave. The transmitter was turned off on Saturday, 26th March 2011 and a short film has been posted to YouTube showing the rather poignant moment as the AEG Telefunken transmitter at Orfordness, Suffolk, is switched off after 29 years of broadcasting
