Peter Jennings

Peter Jennings, the anchor of ABC World News Tonight and a familiar face on US television over 5 decades, has died in New York at the age of 67.

Jennings resigned from ABC News when he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer earlier this year. Such was the American public’s familiarity and respect for him, the formal name of World News Tonight was changed in the 1980s to include his name; his name remaining in the title even when he was on holiday and a stand-in host was presenting.

Viewers in the UK can catch ABC World News tonight’s edition for this evening, given over to a tribute to Jennings, on BBC News 24 at 01:30 tomorrow morning.
