RTE to officially launch Radio 1 on 252 LW
12 March 2004 tbs.pm/656
Well, in amongst the broadcasting community, this has been one of the least widely reported developments, but from Wednesday 17th March, aka St Patrick’s Day, RTE Radio 1 will be broadcasting right across Ireland and most of the UK as well on the 252 LW frequency, the former home of TeamTalk 252 and of course, Long Wave Radio, Atlantic 252.
This move is part of a wider plan of reforms within the radio section, paving the way for the introduction of Digital Radio to Ireland. Amongst the other moves are the temporary closure of RTE Radio 1’s main MW transmitter at Tullamore, which broadcasts on 567 kHz in the Mediuim Wave band, for essential maintenance, and the closure of the RTE 2FM Medium Wave service on 612 kHz entirely from April 2004.
