Tonight’s Anglia Television… in 1979

The TVTimes tells us what was on Anglia Television on Wednesday 1 August 1979. Things worth noting include…

With over a week to go before all bar one of the ITV companies are taken off-air due to industrial action which would last for a 10 week period, Anglia is in summertime mode, with educational-orientated programming (Roger Whittaker in a TV studio in Plymouth aside) to be found occupying the Schools and Colleges slot.

Indeed, the whole day sees three productions scheduled on Anglia each from HTV and Southern, while it’s likely Tyne Tees are the providers of the afternoon’s racing coverage.

Following programmes for younger viewers, Emmerdale Farm at 12.30pm is a repeat showing from the most recent series of the Yorkshire serial drama. Until 1985, what’s now known as Emmerdale took a summer break; the final new episode of 1979 was generally broadcast on Thursday 5 July, with the series resuming on the network on Tuesday 8 January 1980.

Moving into the early evening, and perhaps Border’s landmark series enjoys a schedule spot on the fringes of prime time at 5.15pm: similar to where LWT chose to place the programmes three days before this particular schedule.

Among the cast and crew for The Benny Hill Show – a repeat of the programme originally broadcast on March 14 – at 8.00pm is choreographer Dee Dee Wilde, a founder member of Pan’s People and responsible for directing the resident troupe on the long-running comedy series, who were then known as Hot Gossamer.

A one-off Granada documentary at 9 o’clock, while an HTV drama series gets its first outing at 10.30. A case of the big five closing ranks, maybe?

Eleanor Summerfield of ‘Murder at the Wedding’ was a regular guest on ‘Many a Slip’ – a long-running radio panel show which started on tv, as an early BBC2 offering in 1965.

“Definition” was a long-running format in Canada, running for over 15 years on the private CTV network. The programme’s American creators, Nick Nicholson and Roger Muir, created tons of game show formats but had trouble selling them in their home country while Canada and CTV in particular gobbled them up. Their biggest American success was a format similar to “Mr & Mrs” they called “The Newlyweds,” which ABC would not pick up unless they licensed off the series to golden boy Chuck Barris, who tarted up the format, retitled it “The Newlywed Game” and watched it become a long-running hit.

“Don’t Just Sit There” co-host Rob Buckman had previously appeared in the medical comedy series “The Pink Medicine Show”, which he co-wrote and which also starred Lynda Bellingham.

Hot Gossamer weren’t the resident dance troupe for Benny Hill, but were a one-off parody of Hot Gossip featuring Benny, Jackie Wright and several female dancers, introduced by Henry McGee as Kenny Everett! Dee Dee might well have done the choreography for this sequence, though.

The mini network of the small ten continues here but with Southern opt outs 10.30-12.00.
Anglia show all 3, take it Southern had River somewhere else then had preschool early 11.20-11.50. I assume the Queen Mother was visiting Southampton. Farm is shunted forward to 3.50 as that’s the only other slot left. Leaving Definition to be rescheduled.

Sorry, I’m not quite clear about Steve Barnes’ comment btw.
